I am a percussionist from India, currently based in Canada. My principal instrument is the Tabla; I have been learning it for 18 years. I was born into a non-musical family, but I have habitually tapped my hands on pots and tables since I was four years old. Learning Indian classical music began when I was seven years old. My love for percussion developed as I started listening to various sounds from nature and great maestros playing different instruments.

I completed my Advanced Diploma in Tabla from the Maharaja Sayajurao Gaekwad University in 2011 Vadodara and my Bachelor’s in Music from Bruhad Gujrat Gandharva Mahavidya, Ahmedabad, in 2015. On the academic side, I earned a Master’s in Industrial Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada, in 2022.

Learning music since I was seven has given me many opportunities to play, observe and seek more. I have performed in different festivals in India, including a Guinness world record event named “The World Culture Festival,” which was organized by “Art of Living” in New Delhi, India, in 2016. I have played percussion in various devotional and folklore music in India, especially in the traditional Gujarati folk garba.

I got to compose rhythm for different music originals for independent artists and Record labels on the Global platform, including recording tabla and hand percussions for many Cover singers.

In my early childhood, I started learning Tabla from my first Tabla Guru, Rohan Sant, who taught me my first “Dha” in the Tabla. My intermediate Tabla training was under Bhavin Negandhi and Anil Gandhi, and my advanced training was under Nandkishor Date, Deepak Solanki, and Dr. Chirayu Bhole. I am learning under the guidance of Dr. Chiaryu Bhole, a disciple of Professor Sudhir Kumar Saxena, the legend of Ajrada Gharana. My guruji has a Ph.D. in Tabla specializing in “The art of Punjab Gharana,” he is also a disciple of Pandit Yogesh Samsi. My teaching style and expertise have been in Ajrada Gharana and Punjab Gharana.

I performed and competed in various cultural events at my school, “BHS” and “The Bright School,” Vadodara. I participated in many competitions at the state and national levels from 2010 to 2019 and focused more on intensively learning Tabla. I have attended National level workshops by great Ustad and Pandits such as Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, Pandit Yogesh Samsi, and Pandit Amod Dandge and participated in the live performances of Ustad Zakir Hussain along with meeting him and seeking his blessings.

I started regular gigs and shows when I turned 16 and have been regularly performing in the “Navratri Festival” since 2010 throughout Gujarat. I have also contributed my work in Devotional music, especially in Sundarkands and Bhajans, for a long time since 2014. Sharing the stage with some of the great names in this field have been with top State artists Vatsala Patil, Gautam Dabir, and Kirti Sahay.
I have performed with various local artists and music bands in India, namely Tarang, Avante Garde, The Unplugged Ocean, and the Leher, and I have also performed with a great DJ, DJ Zark. I worked for music studios like “The Virtuoso Music”, “A Wave Lab Studio”, “Odeo Creation”, “A Symphonic Analog Studio” for various classical Kathak recordings, solo projects and cover songs.

I came to Canada in 2021 and have been regularly performing. I conducted Tabla workshops for the Music department of the University of Windsor on Dec 2, 2021, and the University of Waterloo, Canada. I performed fusion music in many restaurants, mainly India 47 and India Paradise, for almost a year and worked with an entertainment company “Desi Noize.” I have performed with local artists in Windsor, such as Josh Johnson, Roy Clarke, and Martin Shultz. I have worked together performing the Tabla with some good DJs in Ontario, such as DJ Danny, DJ Stylz, DJ Natitv, and DJ Spark.

I have been teaching since 2014 and have trained more than 50 students with personal and group sessions. I am still learning with my Guruji, Dr.Chiaryu Bhole, as learning music is a never-ending process.

I have been teaching Indian rhythm in different countries like Canada, the US, and India & Sp. I have not only specialized in Indian Classical Music, but I have also contributed Indian music to Western Music. I am currently working as a production planner and live in Kitchener.

I conduct offline and online sessions along with group sessions. I teach to all age groups, but I recommend online sessions for kids of 8 onwards. Offline training is best for the 5-year age group. I provide certification courses in Indian classical Tabla till the Visharad course, which is a 7-year course and is considered a Degree in Music. My way of teaching is not limited to a student who learns from me; I guide my students whenever they need me and are not learning from me, especially when they are stuck somewhere in the thought process or need guidance.

What to Expect

“Tirakita Tabla Academy” is the academy that focuses on students of all ages to understand their grasping speed and providing the sort of customized training they need. My teaching style is focused on 70% Indian classical training with 30% playing songs, and learning Western beats on the tabla from the very first day of the class. Student gets pdf notes of lessons of all taals, variations in taals, and basic kayadas, initially until the student understands what bols, phrases in tabla, and taal structure are. It will be spontaneous learning and it is more important to write and learn instead of getting pdf notes. Each session will have a majority of practical training. I also write by myself and send it to the student if he is not able to right at the moment. I also grab the interest factor from the student about his/her purpose in learning tabla and I create my customized training pattern for a personal student according to their need. Any new thing learned by the student is always revised in the first 5 mins of the class and then if there is any doubt in it, I dig deeper into that lesson. Every month there are 4 sessions and at the end of the month. There is either a planned or a surprise test that never lasts more than 10 mins and is conducted in the last class of the month. There are talks with the parents whenever they want or when I feel to talk to them regarding the progress of the student. I give phrases to practice with the student which he has to do it sincerely as I say to see the result.

The best part about the academy is that the student will be able to create his own compositions just in the first 6 months or max a year depending on the interest dedication and personal efforts with which the student practices. This will further help in composing music. There is a 30 min free demo session or a paid demo session at a low price according to the length of the session for new learners. I trust my students, and we have both seen the results.
During the year, at least once or twice, there is a meetup of students online, depending on their availability, where students perform anything of their choice, either on a song or classical tabla solo. There is a WhatsApp group by the name Tirakita Tabla Academy family where there is transparency of sharing ideas or practice videos or audio in the group. I always give feedback there.

This is for all students in general:

A teacher only teaches. To see good results, practicing daily, and being sincere with yourself will pull out the best in you. Even if you practice from 10-15 mins in a day, do it on a daily basis. Respect and love your instrument and you will get the same from the Instrument as well. There is a deep concept, “Instrument also teaches you”! Never underestimate your guru and always trust your guru.
I wish you good luck to all the students learning tabla over the world from any Guru.
